A possible problem with Beardies (and a lot of dogs)
is sensitivity to loud noises, such as thunder, low-flying jet planes, or fireworks. Many (but not all) Beardies will freak out
around such noises. Every year we hear
of one or two instances where a Beardie on a trip with their family will be in
a thunderstorm, freak out, and run away.
If a thunderstorm is heading toward us --- even if we can’t hear any
thunder --- we are made aware of it by the behavior of several of our
Beardies. If it’s at night, we’ll
suddenly find three or four dogs jumping up on our bed to huddle trembling as
close to us as possible.
So when you are aware that your Beardie will be around some
unusual loud noises, be prepared. This
is another situation in which having your Beardie comfortable in a crate is
very handy. Just put your Beardie in
their crate with a couple of pads and maybe a chew toy or two, and close the
crate’s door. Again, not all Beardies
completely freak out, but until you’ve been able to observe your Beardie during
a couple of thunderstorms, you should be prepared to be extra alert and careful
with your Beardie during such situations.
