Beardies and Chewing

Beardie owners --- especially owners of Beardie puppies ---  will quickly learn that most Beardies like to chew. This will be especially pronounced as puppies grow and transistion from puppy teeth to adult teeth.  But the chewing tendency can stay with some Beardies their entire lives. So take precautions with things that you definitely don’t want to be chewed (such as shoes, elegant woodwork, etc.) And be prepared to discover that things you never thought could be chewed could be. Things like base boards, door lintels, even drywall itself, can fall into this category.

While there are various concoctions, both commercial and home-made, that purport to help prevent chewing --- or at least help to prevent certain items from being chewed --- the best way to handle this behavior is to provide your Beardie with plenty of things that are OK to be chewed, such as soft dog toys. This won’t stop all destructive chewing --- I am careful to always keep my shoes in a closet that the dogs cannot reach ---- but it will help.

Just be resigned to the fact --- especially if you are raising a young Beardie --- that some items you really really really really don’t want to be chewed up will be.
