Beardies and Cars

Most Beardies “love” going for rides. We’ve found that Beadies under 6 months old will generally do pretty well in a car for their first few rides. But don’t get your hopes too far up that your Beardie does well in a car. At around six or seven months, many (but not all) Beardies seem to “forget” that they do well in a car. You may have an unpleasant surprise when you take your Beardie who has never had a problem in a car before. They can suddenly become the worst car dogs: getting sick, salivating buckets, and other fear-related behaviors.   If your Beardie takes this route, just be patient and keep giving rides to your dog. They’ll eventually work through such problems, and you’ll end up with a dog that “loves” to ride in a car, especially if the car rides end up in a “fun” spot, like a dog park or a beach. We often take ours to an ice cream shop and get them a small cup of vanilla. Our Beardies LOVE to go in a car with us.

Also, when having a dog in a car, always remember about heat. If the sun is shining and the car windows are up, a car’s interior can heat up very quickly if the outdoor temperature is anything over 60° F.

Be aware that a Beardie outside a car is usually not a good mix if the car is moving.  Please see my comments about Beardies and Herding.
